It seems that the summer of 2020 truly belongs to the manga fans. If you’re still trying to recover from last months exciting release schedule, then you might want to sit down because July is not getting outshined. As always I’m joined by my great friend Luke (in italics) to bring you the titles we think out worthy of your time. So let’s get started and see which July manga releases are worth reading.

RaW Hero volume 2

Our very own Musume seemed to think highly of this title in his review for volume 1. Having a high stakes story, most likely you’ll be kept on the edge of your seat throughout. Be warned, with a parental advisory; this may not be a book for everyone to enjoy. If that’s not stopping you, considered picking up the second instalment from one of the year’s most unique releases once it drops on July 21st!

Goodbye, My Rose Garden volume 2

After finally getting to start this series earlier this week, better late than never right? I have to say that I am enjoying it so far. It has an adorable relationship between our two leads, and while I am not quite done with volume 1, I look forward to finishing and starting volume 2. It has an exciting start that pulls you in and leaves you intrigued. Also, the covers for both volumes are gorgeous. They may be some of my favourites in all the series that I currently read. While the cover art may variate a little from what’s inside, it’s still a treat to the eye while reading. Pick this rose from the garden once it blooms on July 21st.

I Had That Same Dream Again: The Complete Manga Collection

While going through the series for July, the premise alone caught my eye. In a coming of age story grade-schooler, Koyanagi Nanoka is assigned by her teacher to find out what happiness means. It seems this will take her to meet different people in various situations to find her answer. After looking a bit more into it, I realized that it is written by Yoru Sumino, the same author from I Want to Eat Your Pancreas. That series is an emotional journey and one of my personal favourites. After seeing they have the same author, I just know that I Had That Same Dream Again is sure to deliver on the emotional front, and I am ready. Pick this up once it’s released on July 7th!

Kingdom of Z volume 1

Okay, I know this may not seem like my type of manga but hear me out. Kingdom of Z is about Satou finding his way around the zombie apocalypse. He meets both Miki a megalomaniac and Kiri, a happy-go-lucky psycho. That sounds like a premise I can get on board with, and after checking out some preview pages, the art style also looks solid. Honestly, I’ve wanted to try something different from what I usually read, and this might do the trick. The first volume for Kingdom of Z drops dead on July 28th.

Kakushigoto: My Dad’s Secret Ambition volume 5

Kakushigoto: My Dad’s secret ambition is a charming little series that I couldn’t help but fall in love with. After checking out the first volume I found that underneath all the humour there is a lot of heart. Although I’m not caught up yet, I’m steadily attempting to make my way through. I just wanted to put it on this list since I genuinely think that it deserves your attention. This series could even be on my list of best new things I’ve checked out this year. You could even check out the anime adaptation (which I’ve heard is great) and give it a try that way. Be ready to pick this up when it comes out digitally on July 21st.
Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal Edition volume 7

Lately, I have been catching up on the Sailor Moon manga here and there, and oh boy do I love it. Encapsulated within the panels is a perfect dose of 90’s nostalgia. I like to think of it as magical girl Power Rangers. Probably not the first one to call it that but it’s still true. If you’re a new fan or even one that has been there since the beginning, then this is a must buy. These eternal editions will truly stand the test of time. They have an updated translation and full-colour pages to boot. I highly recommend getting these in a physical format because they’re just so impressive. Having these on your manga shelves is something to behold. However, not everyone can afford to spare the space, so the digital edition works just fine. Pick up volume 7 when it hits shelves digitally on July 7th.

Soul Eater: The Perfect Edition volume 1

Now, while this technically may not be a new series, it is a new edition for this manga. After diving into Atsushi Ohkubo’s latest series Fire Force, I’ve always wanted to go back and check out Soul Eater. The mangaka’s art style and character design really click with me so much that I can’t help but to pick this up. Now, this perfect edition comes with all the bells and whistles you could ever want. Updated translation and lettering, colour pages, and it even condenses 1 and 1/2 volumes of the original series into a single volume. Not to mention new cover art. I don’t know who that is on the cover but shes already best girl. If you’re like me and ave wanted an excuse to check out this series make sure to pick this up on July 28th.

An Incurable Case of Love volume 4

The first couple of volumes of this steamy medical romance were a bit of a slow burn, but now things seem to be heating up for our valiant Nurse Sakura and the dreamy Doctor Tendo. Their relationship was blossoming nicely in the last volume, but that pesky final page cliffhanger and synopsis for volume 4 suggests that there may be trouble in paradise on the horizon. Don’t go, Dr Tendo! I’ll be checking my pulse when this drops on July 7th!

Radiant volume 12

Fantasia Fantasy! I hardly ever see much buzz for this series, but it’s a solid little adventure series. The last volume saw the start of a new arc after the big Caislean Merlin saga and some drama with the mysterious Grimm in the process. The synopsis promises a spotlight on the cowardly Doc this time around, so we’ll have to see how that goes. See if it’s magical when it drops on July 14th!

One-Punch Man volume 20

Class-S Showdown! The last volume of One-Punch Man delivered the laughs with hilarious hot pot shenanigans with Saitama and the gang. Better gear up before this volume drops on July 7th!

BEASTSTARS volume 7

Let out your wild side! One of Musume’s faves, this series has grabbed my attention with its memorable cast, tense atmosphere and crisp art style. Also, this volume has the GOAT (Red Deer) Louis on the cover, so you just know it’s worth a pickup. It sounds like things are heating up in Cherryton too, from that synopsis! Be on the prowl for this one when it drops on July 21st!

Act-Age volume 1

If you remembered last month, I said that there were about three new manga series releasing this year that I could not wait for. One was Spy X Family and the second is this gem right here. Honestly, I remember reading the first chapter of Act-Age last year and being mesmerized by it. Really, just the first chapter alone had me wanting to binge the whole series that instant. Sadly not all the chapters were available on the Shonen Jump app.
Where do I even start? Our protagonist Kei Yonagi is a struggling actress that manages to catch her big break. She alone is one of the main reasons that I love this series. Her character is complex and very unique from all the other protagonists currently in Jump. Something about how we are presented to her psyche had me hooked. In a non-traditional way, this is a shonen series not with big flashy battles but with psychological turmoil to be fought. After all, what industry if not acting is the most treacherous to make your mark in?
The art style is also unique and just adds to the visceral feeling you get when you get to see Kei act. There is a lot of expressions given to the character’s eyes that it honestly does not feel like an illustration. You get so engrossed that it’s easy to forget you’re reading a manga. Everything about this series makes me want to call it my top manga for 2020. If you want to have a little taste, try out the free chapters on the Jump app. We are slowly getting the backlog filled so it may not be long before everyone can catch up. With a story by Tatsuya Matsuki and art by Shiro Usazaki make sure to get this on July 7th.
