As a relative new comer to Manga, I’ve been attempting to buy, borrow and read as much Manga possible. With a vast and ever expanding selection of books out there, I think it’s important to nail down some of the classics as fast as possible. That said, it’s always a good idea to stay up to date with zeitgeist.
With that in mind, I thought it would be fun to give you a whistle stop tour of all the books I’ve been consuming lately. It might even give you some not so subtle hints to what we might be covering in the near future. So grab a coffee, have a read. Then let us know what you’ve been checking out and what you think about our choices in the comments below.
Discovering Manga in Libraries
Thank the Lord of Books for a well stocked local public library! I have to say I was never expecting my local library to have such a great catalogue of manga. Being able to borrow books risk free has let me expand my horizons into the unknown. I’ve took advantage and have been picking up things I thought I wouldn’t like. Plus it’s saved me some cash in the process.
Bleach Volumes 1 to 4
I grabbed Bleach on a whim, I’ve seen an episode of the anime once 8 or so years ago. At the time I wasn’t that impressed but thought I’d give them a go anyway. Since grabbing these, I’ve noticed they have started to replace their old copies of Bleach. So I’ll have nice fresh and crisp copies to read should I choose to continue on with the series.
Naruto Volumes 17 – 24
Just lately Naruto has become my go to book. I pick it up when I have 5 mins spare, a long bus ride or before I go to sleep at night. I’ve been devouring these pretty quickly, so hopefully the next volumes with be available when I’ve finished with these.
Death Note Volumes 1 – 4
A series I’ve wanted to get into for quite a while, I’ve almost bought the first Black Edition omnibus a couple of times but then happened to see it on the library shelf one day. I started reading the first few chapters and then immediately reserved the next few volumes. I’ve also recently reviewed Death Note Volume 1, so why not go and check that out.
Buying all the Manga!
I’ve also been busy spending hard earned cash too. I’m starting to develop an unmanageable Amazon wish list. I’ve also been trekking all over London to see what I can discover. Thankfully I can tell myself it’s research for my living document: Manga shops in London. This has definitly lead to buying a lot of manga in September.
Skull-Face Bookseller Honda-San Volume 1
This purchase was a total happy accident, after an evening playing arcade machines in Central London, I decided to pop into the nearest Foyles (a bookshop chain in London) and see if they had a Manga section. Turned out they did and for some reason this just jumped out at me. I liked it so much that I read most of it on the bus home. I later found out it already had an anime of Crunchy Roll, get in!
H.P. Lovecraft’s at the Mountains of Madness Volume 1
I’m sure soon it will be well documented on this blog that I’m a total wimp when it comes to horror, however HP Lovecraft has always intrigued me. This caught my eye on the shelf while just casually browsing and I thought why not… I mean who doesn’t need nightmares? Expect a review to pop up of this sometime in the future.
One Punch Man Volumes 5 – 10
Another one of my pick up and put down series I like to read when I have limited time. I decided to stock up for when I make it through volume 5. It’s always good to know you have a little stack of unread tankōbon of a series you’ve been enjoying.
Dr Stone Volumes 1 – 7
I picked up volume 1 in a 3 for 2 deal as I heard this series had a new anime. So essentially it was free so thought it would be worth a punt. Volume 2 through to 7 happened to be in the local library, so why not take advantage and add to my ridiculous reading list?
Berserk Deluxe Edition Volumes 1 – 2
The drain on my wallet continues as I spend a ridiculous amount on these 2 big deluxe editions, this is where I’m happy that Amazon has aggressive pricing on some books. They are lovely and do look especially bad arse on my shelf though. Checkout my review of Berserk Deluxe Edition Volume 1.
My Hero Academia School Briefs Volume 2
Volume 1 of School Briefs was the first Light Novel I’ve ever read, I enjoyed the additional world building it gave fans of the series (even if it does not move along the main plot of the series). For this reason I grabbed the next volume… I now need a little time to sit down with it (I’m a slow arse reader).
That’s all folks!
Well that’s it for now. Why not let me know what you’re reading right this month in the comments below. Maybe I’ll hunt some of your recommendations down and you could see my thoughts up on Manga Worth Reading soon!
