May manga releases

May manga releases worth reading

Our monthly round up of manga with Antonio and Luke

With the craziness that this year has brought the arrival of May is a welcome sight. This month feels a bit light on releases, but that is due to publishers accommodating their release schedules thanks to Covid-19. Even with these changes, there still is a good selection of titles to go around. I am once again joined by Luke Hollywood (in italics) in bringing you our picks. Let’s get going and find out what manga releases in May are worth reading.

Viz Media May manga releases

Ongoing Series

Dr Stone volume 11

Dr Stone volume 11 cover May manga releases

A breath of fresh air amongst some of it’s more battle-orientated Shōnen compatriots. Dr Stone sprinkles a science-fueled twist to a lot of classic concepts from the genre, and maybe one of the few manga on the shelves that can double as both educational and entertaining reading material! We’ve covered the first couple of volumes here on the site already if you want to read up a little more about the series, but for me, it’s a consistently fun read with lots of heart and hilarious art to boot!

Volume 11 continues a new adventure for Senku and his Science Kingdom following the end of the Stone Wars Saga last volume, as they aim to discover the mystery behind the petrification that doomed humanity so long ago. Here’s hoping we get some answers when this volume drops on May 5th, but I’ll be content with just more funny faces from Boichi!

Haikyu!! volume 38

haikyuu volume 38 cover

I haven’t been subtle of my love for this uplifting sports Shōnen (checkout my thoughts) and the current volumes have been proving that love was with good reason. On the surface, this volume might seem like it’ll be a bit of a cool down after the epic climax to the big Karasuno and Nekoma clash in the last volume. With the focus shifting to the supporting cast in the form of the charismatic Bokuto and the Fukurodani team. However, Furudate has proven that the side characters are just as worthy of your love and affection. Bokuto himself is a fan favourite, and I for one am very excited to see how this boisterous Wing Spiker handles himself in the big Spring Tournament. This volume is getting spiked over the net on May 5th, and I can’t wait to receive it!

Kaguya-Sama: Love is War volume 14

love is war volume 14 cover May manga releases

It should be no surprise to anyone who knows me that this title would make the list. Kaguya-Sama: Love is War finds its 14th volume released this month. The series written and illustrated by Aka Akasaka has been on a consistently great pace with its last couple of volumes. Everything has been building up as we find out who will confess their love first, will it be Shirogane or Shinomiya?

It looks like we will finally reach that conclusion come release day. Apart from reaching a potential climax, there is a myriad of great things to look forward to. I always enjoy the quiet and emotional moments that are tucked away between all the crazy shenanigans that unfold. This cover might also be one of my favourites for this series. Be on the lookout when volume 14 hits shelves on May 5th!

My Hero Academia: Smash!! volume 4

my hero academia smash volume 4 cover

Smash is a blast! I mentioned this comedy parody as the perfect pick me up in our relaxing manga recommendations, and I still stand by it. These days we could all use a laugh more than ever. The silly chibi art style from author Hirofumi Neda and wacky take on many of the main series’ more outlandish concepts make this a must-have for any fan of My Hero Academia, or fans of good times in general. As the penultimate volume of the series, I’m going to go beyond and enjoy it Plus Ultra style when it drops on May 5th!

Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku Volume 2

hells paradise volume 2 cover

This was a surprise for me. I picked up the first volume after hearing a good buzz on the series online, and I was impressed! A cross between National Treasure, Suicide Squad, and more ninja flicks than you can shake a stick at, this title is from Viz’s mature Signature imprint. The first volume asked some tough moral questions in between the hardcore action. It introduced a surprisingly in-depth duo in the form of the Assassin Gabimaru and his Executioner, Sagiri. Colour me intrigued with where this series goes next! Find out for yourself when Volume 2 drops on May 19th!

Transformers: The Manga volume 2

transformers the manga volume 2 cover

This manga is more than meets the eye! Collecting several different mini manga series from the “Generation 1” era of the famous robots in disguise, the oversized hardback format do the classic 80’s art justice (much in the same way as Viz’s oversized editions of the various Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure volumes). Still, the real treat is the full-colour gallery included at the end of the volume, which is a sight to behold. As a lot of the art is taken from rare originals and never printed previously, this series has something to offer for both casual and hardcore fans! Volume 2 rolls out on May 12th!

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba volume 12

demon slayer volume 12 cover May manga releases

Shonen isn’t necessarily my go-to genre, but there are always a few titles that I am excited to pick up. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba volume 12, written and illustrated by Koyoharu Gotouge slashes its way onto shelves this month. After finally catching up with the physical volumes, the wait has been killing me to find out what happens next with Tanjiro and the gang.

One of the many reasons to look forward to this series is how well all of its elements work together. When the action is flying off the panels, it feels dynamic, and when the pace slows it never feels boring. All of this is enhanced by its great cast of characters, whether it’s Tanjiro, Zenitsu, Inosuke, Nezuko or the revolving cast of Hashiras, there’s someone for everyone. Keep your eyes peeled when the next instalment arrives on May 5th.

Debut Series

One Piece: Ace’s Story Volume 1

One Piece Aces story volume 1 cover

Here’s a volume that the mere prospect of has the team here at Manga Worth Reading all very excited: A new light novel from Viz Media!? Light Novels are fairly common ground from many Manga publishers today. Still, for some reason, Viz haven’t tapped into the market yet, despite the veritable treasure trove of licenses they have with the Shonen Jump imprint.

Previously we’ve seen a somewhat lacklustre set of light novels released for My Hero Academia in the School Briefs series. Still, this new light novel series seems to be covering new ground with the well regarded Ace’s Story light novel series. Based on a fan favourite from Shōnen all-star One Piece. As a big fan of the character, I’ve always wanted to see more of him in action while we had the chance, I’m excited to read this novel. With confirmation that more light novels from big hitters like Bleach on the way I’m hoping the trend will continue so, we can see Light Novels of our favourite series in the future! Make sure to show your love to everyone’s favourite fiery Big Brother and his crew when they sail your way on May 5th!

Kodansha Comics May Manga Releases

Ongoing Series

Smile Down the Runway volume 9

smile down the runway volume 9 cover

This Shōnen is a real head-turner! I recently took a look at this first volume of this series (article not up for hyperlink currently) and was impressed by this dual underdog tale from an unusual setting. Make no mistake, Chiyuki and Ikuto are Shōnen superstars just as much as your Deku’s and Naruto’s, and those turned off by the fashion focus and designer background are missing out on a truly uplifting tale of guts, perseverance and strutting your stuff on the catwalk! Volume 9 chasse’s your way on May 5th!

The Dorm of Love and Secrets volume 4

The dorm of love and secrets volume 4 cover

A back to back release schedule? Kodansha must be trying to wean me off my Shōnen addiction with all this new Shojo content! It turns out it won’t last too long, however, as this is the final volume of the series, and from the synopsis, it sounds like it’s all about to come crashing down for poor Asahi. Will she discover true love? Will her secrets be revealed? And what about that pesky smartypants dorm? Find out for yourself when this volume drops on May 12th!

Seven Seas Entertainment May Manga Releases

Saki the Succubus Hungers Tonight volume 2

Saki the succubus hungers tonight volume 2 cover

The first volume of Saki the Succubus Hungers tonight proved to be an enjoyable read. Underneath the suggestive eroticism lies quite a humorous and enjoyable story. Check out the review for volume 1. The second instalment looks to follow the same road, so if you were looking for more, don’t worry. You can look forward to continuing this sexy but sweet manga on May 19th!

Kaiten Books May Manga Releases

Shed that Skin, Ryugasaki-san! volume 1

Shed that Skin Ryugasaki-san kaiten books

A bit of a surprising entry on this list we have Shed that Skin, Ryugasaki-san! Written and illustrated by Kazumoto Ichimoto this manga is one of the launch titles for Kaiten Books. The new kids on the publishing block have brought us an interesting story. Ryugasaki-san is a girl with many reptile-like qualities who meets a classmate that coincidentally loves reptiles. Of course, a romance begins to slither its way into our hearts. Certainly, it sounds like a story with a quirky charm. Be on the lookout when it drops on May 15th. Let’s also wish our friends at Kaiten good luck and hope they can bring us more exciting titles soon!

So do any of the series mentioned above catch your eye? With so many releases, it only makes sense that we missed some, so if there are any you want us to take a look at or want to share with others let us know. We’ll see you next month!
