A thirty-five-year-old salaryman named Renta stops by a convenience store on his way home from work. His shopping list: dinner, and some entertainment in the form of an adult magazine. It’s a typical night for a bachelor, but things take an odd turn when he looks up and sees a girl with her face pressed against the store’s window. Saki the Succubus Hungers Tonight, is Ghost Ship‘s latest ecchi to push the boundaries of the genre. But is Saki the Succubus Hungers Tonight worth reading?
The girl runs off into the night. Renta makes his way back to his apartment, only to see that same girl, passed out in front of his door. Shocked, he takes her inside, but as he tries to help her, he slowly realizes that there’s more to her than meets the eye.
Saki the Succubus’s characters
A twenty-year-old girl who is out on her own for the first time in her life. Modest and shy, she has a personality that is entirely at odds with her nature as a succubus.
A bachelor who is still a virgin at the age of thirty-five. Saki’s sudden appearance in his life becomes both a blessing and a curse.
Saki’s older sister and an experienced seductress.
StSHT isn’t a full-blown hentai manga, so you won’t see any genitals. You will. However, often see this little fellow, who tends to grow much more “prominent” when Saki is around.
This manga doesn’t quite reach porn levels. There’s no actual sex, and genitals are not shown. There is plenty of nudity (Saki’s breasts spend a lot of time on full display) and scenes of both male and female masturbation. It’s more risqué than say, Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs (which is also a Seven Seas title), but it stops short of XXX territory.
Hungry for some story
Renta takes Saki inside and goes to call an ambulance until he discovers that she is just hungry. He gives her the extra-large bento he bought from the convenience store, which seems to bring her back to life. Still, her stomach keeps growling.
He asks if she wants more food, but apparently, she’s hungry for something else. What that is, she’s too embarrassed to say. She does, however, need to shower (it’s been a week since her last bath) so Renta lets her use his. While she’s showering, he contemplates the big problem in his pants that doesn’t seem to want to go away.
From the moment he picked her up, his hormones have been firing on all cylinders. He wonders if Saki is emitting some powerful pheromone because he’s never been this turned on in his life. Not wanting to do something that will hurt Saki and that he will later regret, he decides that he has to send her on her way.
That is until she steps out and announces that she washed her panties in the shower out of habit and that she would like to stay until they dry out, which means having to stay the night. What’s Renta going to do? How is he going to survive being around Saki for a full night?
Saki the Succubus Hungers Tonight volume 1 spoilers
He’s going to masturbate. His plan: wait until Saki falls asleep, then sneak into the bathroom to take care of business before he completely loses his mind.
Saki, however, makes that far more complicated than he’s expecting. She wakes up in the middle of the night (just as he’s in the middle of a furious stroke session) and wanders to the bathroom. She comes back, and instead of sleeping on the futon on the floor, she crawls into bed with Renta, wraps herself around his arm, and passes out.
Renta, now pummeled with Saki’s pheromones and unable to move, does what in most cases would be unthinkable: he jacks off right next to her, until blessed relief – and sleep – comes at last.
The next day, Saki is red-faced, but the growling in her stomach has stopped. Renta profoundly apologizes for what he did the previous night but explains that he did it because he didn’t want to get any worse ideas. Things get more and more awkward, until the doorbell rings, and Saki’s sister Yumeka waltzes in.
It doesn’t take Yumeka long to figure out what’s going on, so she lets the thoroughly confused Renta in on a few secrets:
She and Saki are both succubi.
When a succubus’s stomach is growling, it means she’s craving male essence (i.e. semen).
When a succubus runs low on essence, she begins emitting a powerful aphrodisiac, which causes all the men around her to go mad with lust.
And the biggest revelation of all…
Saki is very reserved when it comes to men. Unlike her sister, who has a number of men at her beck and call, Saki refuses to take essence from a man that she doesn’t love. Unfortunately, she’s also timid around guys and has never even had a boyfriend.
Up until her twentieth birthday, Yumeka shared the essence she collected with her, but now that she is an adult, Saki must fend for herself. She’s not doing a good job. The reason she was starving when Renta found her is because she had gotten kicked out of her house for refusing to act like a real succubus and was homeless.
Oh, and there’s another revelation. That stroke session that Renta pulled when Saki was asleep on his arm? It turns out she was awake. And that she cleaned up the mess that Renta left behind. Yumeka quickly realizes that being with Renta is the best situation for Saki, a succubus who refuses to seduce men. Saki already harvested essence from Renta. Maybe she’ll do it again.
“Let her stay with you” she asks Renta. Not wanting Saki to be homeless, and tempted by the prospect of home-cooked meals, he agrees. Now, however, he’s stuck living with a succubus who wants to save herself for marriage. Leading to a whole lot of frustration for him, and a whole lot of entertainment for us.
Art or art?
The art in this book is wonderful. The artist(s?) does a great job of giving both Saki and Renta unique looks and creating lead characters that are good-looking without being overwhelmingly beautiful. The backgrounds aren’t overly detailed, but they do a great job of setting the stage.
Is Saki the Succubus Hungers Tonight volume 1 worth reading?
Is it geared towards an older audience? Yes. Is it suggestive? Yes. Does it push the envelope of what is porn and what isn’t? Yes. Is Saki the Succubus Hungers Tonight volume 1 worth reading? Yes.
However, it’s also a funny story about a likeable couple who are attracted to each other but have no idea how to express it, let alone be in a relationship with another person. Renta struggles as he deals with Saki’s pheromones; Saki struggles as she refuses to give in to her body’s craving for essence. There are erotic situations in this story, but also some hilarious ones. Saki is worth reading for both.
Volume 1 is available physically from Amazon but can be purchased and read digitally on BookWalker.
